Tracing back its origins to middle 19th century, the Jummah Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Mauritius and has been designed with a mix of Indian, Creole and Islamic architecture. Within the walls of the mosque, stands a majestically beautiful tree whose roots date back as far as the 1850s. The mosque is also the resting place of Jamal Shah (a pir from India), who lies in a marble tomb. If you ever get the chance to visit on a Friday, you will be greeted with numerous food sellers after your visit, offering a plethora of delicious Mauritian snacks.
The mosque offers guided visits, even to non muslims onto the grounds of the building.
