WHY IT'S WORTH THE DRIVE

The gorge view no photo does justice.

The viewpoint sits a short walk from the car park, along a path through highland forest that opens suddenly onto the gorge. From the railing, the falls drop through a curtain of green into the valley below, with Black River Gorges National Park stretching out toward the south coast in the distance.

Conditions here change quickly. After heavy rain, the water runs fuller and the sound carries further across the gorge; on drier days, the flow is gentler and the surrounding forest more visible. Cloud and mist can also drift through the valley, particularly in the early morning, which shifts the view from one visit to the next. Alexandra Falls works well alongside Grand Bassin, the Black River Gorges Viewpoint or Chamarel, all within a similar stretch of the south west. Given the drive and the short time needed at the viewpoint itself, it is best treated as one stop within a longer south-west itinerary rather than a destination on its own.

Good to know.

No — the viewpoint is free and open daily during daylight hours, with no booking required.

Most visitors spend 20–30 minutes at the viewpoint. It works well as a short stop on a longer south-west itinerary rather than a destination on its own.

Not from this viewpoint — the marked trails into Black River Gorges start from the Black River Gorges Visitor Centre, about 20 minutes away by car.

Yes, the path is short and the viewpoint is railed, though we’d still recommend holding little ones’ hands near the edge.

Late afternoon, when the light is softer and rakes across the gorge — it also tends to be quieter than midday.
