Why It's Worth the Stop

One of the widest views in the national park.

This is one of the easiest viewpoints to reach in Black River Gorges National Park — right off the main road, with parking a few steps from the railing. From here, the land drops away into a wide bowl of forested ravines, with the Black River mountains rising on either side and, on clear days, the coastline visible in the distance.
The forest below is home to much of Mauritius’ native wildlife, including the pink pigeon and Mauritius kestrel, both once critically endangered. Troops of macaques are often seen along the railing itself, so it is worth keeping food out of sight. Morning visits tend to offer the clearest views, before cloud and haze build up over the gorge later in the day. The viewpoint sits close to Alexandra Falls and within reach of Grand Bassin, making it easy to combine with either as part of a wider south-west route. Most visitors treat it as a brief stop rather than a destination in itself — enough time to take in the view and continue on.
