Out in the North West of the lands of Mauritius, lies a serene and tranquil spot, a garden, whose name is renowned throughout the globe for being the oldest botanical garden in the whole of the southern hemisphere. Constructed by Pierre Poivre in the 18th century, while Mauritius was under the governance of the French, the Pamplemousses Garden was originally a plantation to provide food for the inhabitants of Port Louis.
Since then, the garden has grown into the magnificent 73 hectare popular tourist attraction it is today. Teeming with various spices, ebonies and close to 100 different species of plants with origin scattered all throughout the globe, the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden is a must visit on the list of any tourist to have ever stepped on Mauritian soil.
