A sheltered strip of white sand under casuarinas on the south coast, where a length of surviving reef keeps the lagoon calm — the easiest swimming beach on a coastline otherwise known for cliffs and open ocean.
Most of the southern shoreline of Mauritius has no reef in front of it, which is why it produces cliffs, blowholes and warning signs rather than swimming beaches. Bel Ombre is the exception. A stretch of reef survives offshore here, so the ocean breaks out at sea and what reaches the sand is a shallow, protected lagoon — clear, gently shelving and calm enough for children. The public beach itself is a ribbon of white sand backed by mature casuarinas, which means real shade, something a surprising number of Mauritian beaches lack.
Behind it lies the Domaine de Bel Ombre, a sugar estate dating back to the eighteenth century that now takes in resort hotels, an eighteen-hole golf course, the restored Château de Bel Ombre and a 1,300-hectare nature reserve climbing into the hills. The result is an unusual combination: a genuinely public, free beach with proper facilities and a working estate immediately behind it, so you can spend the morning in the water and the afternoon on a 4×4 safari or at lunch in a colonial dining room. Weekdays are quiet; at weekends Mauritian families arrive early with picnics and barbecues, and the atmosphere is the better for it.
