A long crescent of sand between Trou aux Biches and Grand Baie, backed by one of the biggest casuarina parks on the island — the north’s favourite public beach, and the place Mauritians go on a Sunday.
Mon Choisy curves for well over a kilometre between Trou aux Biches and Pointe aux Canonniers, and unlike most beaches on this coast it has real depth behind it — a wide belt of mature casuarinas and open grass that works as a public park. That space is what makes it: room to park, room to spread out, and proper shade well back from the water, which very few Mauritian beaches offer.
The lagoon is shallow, calm and clear, protected by the reef offshore, and the bottom is clean sand rather than seagrass, so it swims well and suits children. On Sundays and public holidays the whole place turns into a party — extended families arrive at dawn to claim shade, cars line the road, and the smell of barbecue carries the length of the beach. Come on a weekday morning and the same stretch is almost empty. Because the coast faces west, sunsets here are excellent, and food vans and boat operators work the roadside for most of the day.
Shallow, calm and clean-bottomed — one of the easier swims in the north. No lifeguards. Watch for boat traffic near the launch areas at the Trou aux Biches end.
Reef-safe sunscreen, a picnic if you want one, and cash for the food vans. Everything else is available along the coast road.
