How was the colours formed?

The formation of Chamarel’s Seven Coloured Earth is a captivating tale of geological wonder. It all began millions of years ago when volcanic activity shaped the landscape of Mauritius. As lava flowed from the depths of the Earth’s crust, it cooled and solidified, creating layers of basalt rock.

Over time, the relentless forces of erosion, wind, and rain began to sculpt the surface of the land. As these elements wore away at the basalt rock, they exposed layers of volcanic ash containing different minerals and metal oxides.

Each layer of ash contains varying amounts of iron, aluminum, magnesium, and other minerals, which oxidize at different rates when exposed to the elements. This process, known as weathering, leads to the formation of distinct colors, ranging from vibrant reds and yellows to subtle blues and purples.

The result is a stunning mosaic of hues that seem to dance together in perfect harmony, creating the mesmerizing spectacle of Chamarel’s Seven Coloured Earth.
